Combination mill to Kazakhstan

POMINI Long Rolling Mills has been contracted by Shymkent Temir Limited Liability Partneship for the design and supply of a bar combination mill to be installed in the city of Shymkent, Kazakhstan. The new mill will allow Shymkent Temir to expand its product catalog catering to the construction markets in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Phase 1 of the project will consist of a bar rolling mill which will include both slow- and high-speed lines. The hot commissioning is scheduled for mid-2024. Phase 2 will see a rod outlet added to the rolling train for producing coils.

The mill will process billets in carbon steel with a yearly capacity of 300,000 metric tons. The bar mill installed in phase 1 will be capable to produce bars for concrete reinforcement (rebar) with diameters ranging from 8 to 40 mm, plain rounds with diameters ranging from 10 to 40 mm, square and hexagonal bars with sizes comprised from 12 to 40 mm. In phase 2 a rod outlet will be added to produce coils of wire rods in diameters from 5.5 to 16 mm and of rebars in diameters from 6 to 12 mm. The layout and equipment will be designed for both phases 1 and 2.

Included in the project, a 60 tph pusher-type reheating furnace will deliver hot 150 mm square billets to the rolling train, which will feature eighteen Red Ring Series 5 housing-less rolling stands, grouped in roughing, intermediate and first finishing train. After the rolling train, the mill will separate into low- and high-speed lines.

In the low-speed line larger sizes from 14 to 40 mm will be thermo-processed, hot divided and delivered by an apron system to the cooling bed at the maximum speed of 13.5 m/s. In the high-speed line smaller sizes from 8 to 16 mm will be further rolled through a 4-stand no-twist finishing monoblock with intermediate cooling, thermo-processed, hot divided and delivered by a twin-channel braking system to the cooling bed at the maximum speed of 28.5 m/s. After cooling, the bars will be grouped in layers and cold divided by a static shear. The desired number of bars will be precisely counted and collected in bundles which will be tied, weighed, labeled and stored.

In phase 2 a second identical 4-stand monoblock will be added to roll wire rods and rebars at the maximum speed of 70 m/s. After the thermo-processing waterboxes, a laying head will deposit the bars in spiraled rings onto a continuous cooling conveyor equipped with cooling fans, at the end of which the rings will be collected by the coil forming station. The coils will then be vertically handled through final air cooling, compacting, tying, weighing, labeling and storage.

Shearing units for cropping, emergency scrapping, hot and cold division will be supplied. The mechanical equipment will be rounded off by change parts, shop devices for roll and ring changing, first supply of rolls, rings, shear blades, laying head pipes.

The main electrical supply will include an Uninterruptible Power Supply, the main and auxiliary drives and motors, the L1 (basic) automation. The fluid systems will also be part of the scope of supply. POMINI Long Rolling Mills will provide advisory services for the installation and commissioning.

Established in 2017, Shymkent Temir currently manufactures billets from continuous casting.
